INDIANAPOLIS (WLKI)- Gov. Mike Braun has directed the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to expedite its review of proposals that could reduce electric bills for Indiana Michigan Power and NIPSCO customers.

The governor said the proposals should receive prompt consideration so customers can receive any approved savings as quickly as possible, according to WNDU.

Indiana Michigan Power is proposing approximately $59 million in customer bill reductions in 2027. A typical Indiana residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month would save about $100 annually under the proposal, the company said.

The company also described a proposal to provide additional bill reductions and freeze monthly residential rates for three consecutive years.

NIPSCO's separate proposal would return $57.5 million in revenue associated with data center development to existing electricity customers. Residential customers would receive approximately $5 in monthly credits for 18 months, totaling about $90.

The NIPSCO credits remain subject to commission approval. Braun's directive seeks an accelerated review rather than granting approval itself.

According to the governor's office, Indiana Michigan Power already delivered two rate reductions during the first half of 2026.

The proposed savings would apply to customers of the respective utilities. Actual bill changes would depend on the approved terms and, for usage-based reductions, how much electricity a household consumes.
